Legal aspects

The legal framework that establishes the protection of cultural assets in Chile is regulated by Law 17,288 of National Monuments of 1970. The Council of National Monuments has also taken part in the matter even before the regulations existed, for 1970 the CMN made up of twenty directors and eight advisers as a collegiate body on the matter that would appoint an executive secretary, whose responsibility would be to prepare the minutes of the Council sessions, which would be held once a month. Nowadays the CMN has a little less than 100 people and some regional representation, although the law does not provide for effective regionalization.
